Release date: 18 February 2014
Benighted is a death metal band from Saint-Étienne, France. Carnivore Sublime is their seventh release in sixteen years, and it’s full of blistering breakdowns and double-blast beats fit for any death metal fan. Julien Truchan’s grindcore screams/growls sound like a pig being roasted alive. Adrien Guérin and Olivier Gabriel’s guitars are super heavy in that classic deathgrind way. Now, since we’re dealing with deathgrind, the themes are bound to be pretty savage: Carnivore Sublime is a concept album of a man’s descent into paranoia and insanity, leading to a newfound interest in cannibalism. But you really won’t be able to tell, even if you can understand the clean lyrics (when they appear). Some songs are even in French (#9, #10)! These are the best/most fun ones – I mean, come on, how often are you going to be able to play metal dans Francais?? You know, death metal is a funny genre; sure, it’s appalling in its own right; but albums like Carnivore Sublime are a specific type of nigh-transcendent degeneration, where contemporary song structure is pummelled into primality; like a particularly sadistic chapter of Antonin Artaud’s Theatre of Cruelty that exists solely to reflect the chaos of reality. This album is not necessarily a fun time (there are several no-plays due to subject matter), but it is certainly a headbanging one that death metalheads should enjoy.
Too abrasive for morning shows. Perfect for metal shows. Out on Season of Mist.
