Release date: 31 October 2013
British group Sea Bastard brings four tracks of sludge/doom metal on their second full-length release, Scabrous. Scabrous is more experimental than 2012’s self-titled; the trademark long instrumentals are qualified by torrential feedback and scaturient distortion (e.g. “Nokken”). Track lengths range from the 8-minute “Door Sniffer” to the 20-minute “Metamorphic Possession.” Oli Irongiant’s guitars are absolutely masterful at creating a crushing downpour of slow sludge with the extreme drop-tuning found in stoner metal. Vocalist Ian Montgomery screams and growls first-person accounts of the abstruseness of death and nameless beasts lifted from the Cthulhu mythos. You can actually hear the impressive bass, too! The recondite, purposely difficult riffs mirror the horrors described therein. The tempos are slow and drawn out; solos meander and explore each motif defined in the four tracks. Scabrous is not an easy listen, but one that is immensely rewarding and a great addition to any metal set or late-night shift.
Perfect for metal shows. Skip for morning shows. It’s self-released.
