Gorguts – “Colored Sands”

Gorguts - Colored Sands

Tag: Heavy

Release date: 3 September 2013

Colored Sands is the genre-defining fifth full-length album (and first since reuniting in 2008) by Canadian death metal group Gorguts. Colored Sands pushes the capabilities of death metal to its absolute edge, mixing the technical virtuosity of Necrophagist, the crushing soundscapes of At the Gates, and the sprawling progressiveness of Opeth into a masterpiece. The title alludes to Tibetan Buddhist sand mandalas: extensive sand paintings that are traditionally destroyed upon completion. Luc Lemay (Gorguts’ primary songwriter and only consistent member) vacillates between his deep growl and a colossal roar. The trademark double bass drums and trampling cymbal crashes are back! Solos, although less present when compared to previous releases, wring and mangle chord structures into something unrecognizable. This is truly some deep shit. There’s even a classical interlude (“The Battle of Chamdo”) written by Lemay on piano! Although not for the faint of heart, Colored Sands is a supremely apt introduction to both death metal and the modern heavy metal scene.

Absolutely mention metal shows. Too abrasive for morning shows.  Brought to you by Season of Mist.
