Release date: 17 September 2013
Big Tree is an indie five-piece from California, led by Kaila McIntyre-Bader, a singer-songwriter who doesn’t sound like Zooey Deschanel (you’re finally getting over her, indie music!). They play a mix of folky Midwestern roots and California-bay area pop on the My, How You’ve Grown EP, their second EP release. It’s another album describing the insecurities you face in your 20s, where you’re really trying to set who you are. They’re like a more hi-fi and orchestrated Mountain Goats. There’s a fun doo-wop/60s soul flavor on “Like a Fool” and a sunny guitar solo on “San Francisco.” The slick, polished production might detract from folk fans. McIntyre-Bader’s sing-along melodies are accompanied by piano and epic-sounding drums, with bluegrass-influenced guitars popping up a couple of times. It’s pretty, rather varied, and will add well to your indie and singer-songwriter sets. My, Have You Grown is fit for a road trip in the mountains.
Good for morning shows. It’s self-released.
