Release date: 21 October 2013
Ducktails is the project of Matt Mondanile from Real Estate, who released five tracks of psych pop on the EP Wish Hotel. “Tie-Dye”‘s swirling electronic vibrato and “Naive Music”‘s synth line strangely remind me of soundtracks from Kirby Dream Land 3. It’s friendly and innocuous, if unrefined. Mondanile’s lo-fi, meandering vocals are analogous in delivery and production to Ira Kaplan of Yo La Tengo. There’s a considerable jazz influence, the track “Jazz” notwithstanding (it’s in 5/4, clever right?). Percussion focuses on snares and hi-hats (think Jimmy Cobb), which adds a coffee shop flavor to the casual, downtempo milieu. Electric guitars strum in a folk style as keyboards lead the melodies. There are just enough ideas to fill up the EP; I didn’t need anything more than what was offered. Go chill to it.
